Screen Time Is Not Helping Anyway

Some of the most recent research suggests that all our screen time is not helping our sleep in the least.

I’m not a scientist, and I am paraphrasing here, so bear with me. Screens (phones, laptops, TVs, etc.) put out the “blue” spectrum light. This is the light that we see in the morning that triggers our brain to wake up.

When you spend time on any device (the closer to your eyes, the worse it is) within 3 hours of bedtime, your brain is mightily confused. It’s getting the signal to wake up, not go to sleep.

Stay off all electronic devices for at least 3 hours before bed. This is torture for many of us in today’s screen-addicted world, but your health may be at stake here.

You could also invest in a pair of blue-blocking sunglasses (they don’t darken things, everything appears yellow) and use those to do your evening screen time stuff. I have some, and they work pretty well.

Stress may very well play a role in your sleep problems, and others on here have offered excellent suggestions for stress relief, but I suspect your screen time has a lot to do with it.

My other suggestion that I swear by Get yourself a copy (a paper copy) of Moby Dick. When you can’t sleep, please turn on the light and try to read it. In 10 minutes, your eyes will be blurring and shutting because of sheer boredom. I am dead serious here.
