Babies are totally helpless and need proper care and nurture from their parents or care-takers to grow up healthily. You need to put your babies to sleep in the right position. The wrong sleep positions can be very dangerous for the health of the baby, bone development and breathing patterns. Here is how you should make your baby sleep in the right way.
Dangerous Sleeping Position
Sudden unexpected death in Infancy is a condition in which babies suddenly die. This may be due to sudden deaths in infants due to suffocation or any other reasons. It is very dangerous to let or make babies sleep on their chest or stomach. If you make your baby sleep on their stomach, it can put some pressure on their jaws and block the airways. Sleeping on the stomach also puts the face very close to the bed, making them breathe the same air. This can result in getting low oxygen. Sleeping on the stomach on a soft mattress can cause suffocation in babies. They rebreathe the exhaled air and this might block the baby’s airways from all directions.
This is also not recommended for babies as they tend to roll on their tummies while sleeping, leading to increase in risk of SIDS.
This is the safest sleeping position for babies. It is the most common and the best sleeping position for babies. In this position, the airways are open and this position has minimal risk of suffocation. As per the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, this position is perfect for short naps as well as for longer durations of sleep in babies.
But there are some precautions you might keep in mind when putting your baby to sleep in this position as well. If you are making your baby sleep in this position for a long duration, they may suffer from positional plagiocephaly. This is a condition of flattened head and which can lead to brachycephaly, a case of flattened back. These are temporary conditions that can be normalized as soon as the baby grows.
One can prevent the risks of making a baby sleep for longer durations on sleep-on-back style by encouraging more tummy time when the baby is awake, regularly turning the baby to the side when they are not sleeping and also by reducing the time spent in carriers or car-seats. These are a few protocols one must keep in mind while putting their baby to sleep.
New parents might not be aware of these small but very important tips to make a baby sleep in the right way. Making a baby sleep in the recommended baby sleeping position ensures proper sleep, proper health and no risks. You can also ask your doctor about the recommended baby sleeping position and some after precautions you must keep in mind to ensure that your child has a safe and sound sleep.
